A formal rental agreement is the foundation of a healthy landlord-tenant relationship. In Bangladesh, oral agreements are common but highly discouraged. Always insist on a written contract (Deed of Agreement) printed on non-judicial stamp paper. The agreement should clearly state the monthly rent, the security deposit amount, the rent increment policy (usually 5-10% annually or bi-annually), and the notice period required for vacating the premises (typically one to two months).
